The
village (Borghetto) is a medieval complex that along with the castle
forms a harmonious unit and is closed off by 2 gates, one at the
bridge over the Candigliano river, the other at via Cupa, beneath
the church of S. Pietro, erected in the XIVth century and extended
in 1773.
The
Castle underwent considerable building work, additions, changes and
decoration continually from late medieval times until the late 16
hundreds.
The
Brancaleonis, probably descendents of the Longobardis, abandoned
their first fort of Mondelacasa (still visible today are the castle
remains on a summit beneath Monte Nerone, called Muracci).
They built the castle in the XIIIth century on a pre-existing
ancient Piobbico community (Publicum), still traceable in the N-E
wing of the palace.
The
Brancaleoni Castle has been the object in recent years of skilful
restoration, the work of the Carli company, which has restored it to
its ancient splendour, giving to the visitor one of the most
beautiful palaces of the Montefeltro area.
